BMW 5 Series and i5 sedans to be launched in Germany, Europe on Oct 21
The new BMW 5 Series sedan and the first BMW i5 sedan will be launched in Germany and other European countries on October 21, 2023. The new edition of the BMW 5 Series will make its road debut in the USA on October 28, 2023, and other global markets will follow on November 25, 2023.

We have already reported to you that BMW is readying the eight-generation 5 Series for launch during the festive season in India this year. Now, we have new details about the wheelbase and powertrains that’ll be on offer – the new 5 Series will be available in both ICE and electric versions in India, and both will be offered with a different wheelbase.

The current-gen BMW 5 Series sedan has been sold out in India. The seventh-gen 5 Series was launched back in 2017 and was only available with a diesel engine in the last few months of its production. Although the model is still listed on the carmaker's official website, sources tell us that BMW India has told its dealer fraternity to stop accepting orders for the sedan.

The eighth-gen BMW 5 Series, along with its all-electric counterpart, the i5, will be brought to India in the long-wheelbase form during the 2024 festive season. Aimed at the chauffeur-driven buyer, offering more legroom for rear seat passengers, the eighth-gen 5 Series will directly take on the new-gen Mercedes-Benz E-Class, which is due later this year and has been available in long-wheelbase guise for a couple of generations. The entry of the 5 Series LWB will also mark the first time this luxury sedan has come to India in the extended-wheelbase form.

 On the other hand, the 550e variant draws power from a larger 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six petrol powerplant that is paired with an electric motor. This hybrid powertrain pumps out 483 bhp peak power and 700 Nm of maximum torque. The 550e gets an all-wheel drive setup and can run up to 90 kilometres in pure electric mode. For transmission duty, both the 530e and 550e variants get an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
